Mayer Wins Back-To-Back Challengers In Meerbusch

Revisit the week that was on the ATP Challenger Tour as we applaud the achievements of those on the rise and look ahead to who’s in action in the week to come

Cittadino Challenger (Meerbusch, Germany): In an all-German final, top seed Florian Mayer won back-to-back Challenger titles by defeating Maximilian Marterer, 7-6(4), 6-2. The 32 year old didn't drop a set throughout the week. Mayer also prevailed last week at the Challenger last week in Portoroz, Slovenia. He now has 13 ATP Challenger Tour titles to his name. Meanwhile, the 21 year old Marterer was competing in his first Challenger final.

Challenger Acqua Dolomia Tennis Cup (Cordenons, Italy): Second seed Taro Daniel picked up his first ATP Challenger Tour title of the year by defeating fourth seed Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain, 6-3, 6-4. Daniel won his first three Challenger titles last year. Gimeno-Traver was competing in his first Challenger final since winning in February 2015 in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

Mayer: “It’s the first time in my long career that I won two consecutive titles. This is really something special and it shows that the hard work after Hamburg has paid off.”

Marterer: “This has been the biggest match in my career so far. I had only made it into one Challenger semi-final before. Playing against Flo here is special and not easy. I was pretty nervous but he just played better today,

The lone Challenger on the schedule for next week is the $50,000 event in Manerbio, Italy, World No. 89 Gerald Melzer is the top seed, while Daniel and Gimeno-Traver look to continue their form from Cordenons as the second and fourth seeds, respectively. Marterer is also in the draw this week. Other notable names include seventh seed and #NextGen star Elias Ymer of Sweden, and top-ranked junior Stefano Tsitsipas of Greece.
