ATP ACES For Charity: Jamie Murray
Jamie Murray backs charity supporting children in Colombia
Charities and Causes
Jamie Murray’s wife, Alejandra, is from Colombia and so supporting the country’s most at risk children is an issue that is close to his heart.
Children Change Colombia (formerly called Children of the Andes), established in 1991, is committed to keeping children safe, defending children’s rights, and strengthening children's organisations in Colombia. It works in partnership with local organisations to reach Colombia’s most at risk and excluded children, working on issues that are neglected by others, including sexual violence and exploitation, forced recruitment into armed groups and demobilisation of child soldiers, access to education, and violence in schools and communities. Jamie and Alejandra have supported Children Change Colombia since 2011, organising a number of tennis clinics to raise funds and awareness.
The charity received a €10,000 grant from ATP Aces for Charity in 2012. This money benefitted a project that reduced and prevented the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) in the Colombian city of Cartagena. This project provided specialised psychological, legal and social support to child survivors of CSEC, worked with children and families to raise awareness of the problem and helped civil servants improve the accessibility of protective services to at risk children and families.
In 2017, Children Change Colombia will receive a grant of €15,000 from ATP Aces for Charity, again to support a project tackling the serious issue of CSEC, this time in Colombia’s capital city, Bogota. In total the project will work with 840 children and young people and 326 adults (parents, teachers and community members).
Murray continued his support for the charity in 2020 by organising a tennis memorabilia auction. The auction included signed racquets from himself and his brother, Andy Murray, as well as numerous clothing items.
“I've been a supporter of Children Change Colombia for many years, helping the most at risk children and their families to challenge poverty, inequality and violence,” said Murray. “The donations raised from this auction will go to the charity to help ensure that children in Colombia can have a safe and happy childhood and a fulfilling future.”
