Cilic Passes McDonald Test In Melbourne

Khachanov through in straight sets

Marin Cilic needed three hours and 37 minutes to overcome Mackenzie McDonald 7-5, 6-7(9), 6-4, 6-4 at the Australian Open on Wednesday.

The sixth seed, who has reached the third round in Melbourne on eight occasions, hit 67 winners and won 77 per cent of first-serve points (63/82) to improve to 28-10 at the event. Last year, Cilic beat Rafael Nadal and Kyle Edmund to reach his first final at Melbourne Park (l. to Federer).

This marks the second straight year that McDonald has pushed a Top 10 seed in the Australian Open second round. In 2018, the American fell in five sets to No. 3 seed Grigor Dimitrov.

Cilic will face 2009 semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco for a place in the fourth round. The 35-year-old Spaniard defeated Radu Albot of Moldova 6-1, 7-6(2), 6-3 in two hours and 28 minutes.

Karen Khachanov reached the third round in Melbourne for the first time, defeating Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. The 10th seed, who beat World No. 1 Novak Djokovic to claim the Rolex Paris Masters title last November, landed 16 aces and converted seven of 15 break points en route to victory.

Khachanov will meet Roberto Bautista Agut or John Millman for a spot in the Round of 16. The 22-year-old trails Bautista Agut 1-2 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series and has never played Millman at tour-level.
