Djokovic & Tipsarevic Bow Out In Cincinnati

Serbians fall to Kubot/Melo On Monday

Novak Djokovic’s first match since prevailing at Wimbledon proved to be brief. Teaming with fellow Serbian Janko Tipsarevic, the pair fell to second seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo 6-2, 6-3 at the Western & Southern Open.

Melo took the title at this event in 2016 (w/Dodig). Awaiting them in the next round are Radu Albot and Karen Khachanov or Cristian Garin and Benoit Paire.

Eighth seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan clinched 1,100 tour-level wins as a doubles team by defeating Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin 7-6(4), 3-6, 10-7. Bob achieved that milestone individually with their second-round win last week at the Coupe Rogers, joining Mike as the only players to accomplish the feat in doubles. The five-time Cincinnati champions face Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek in the next round.

Third seeds Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus dropped just 10 points on serve in their 6-3, 6-1 victory over Laslo Djere and Dusan Lajovic. Sixth seeds Mate Pavic and Bruno Soares prevailed over Roland Garros champions Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies 7-6(2), 4-6, 10-7. Soares won the title here last year (w/J. Murray)

Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski scored a hard-fought 6-7(5), 6-2, 10-8 victory over Nicholas Monroe and Tennys Sandgren. There could potentially be an all-Murray showdown in the last eight as Andy Murray & Feliciano Lopez are in the same quarter of the draw. Americans Ryan Harrison and Jack Sock needed only 45 minutes to sprint past Oliver March and Jurgen Melzer 6-2, 6-2.
