View Schedule: Federer, Tsitsipas Feature On Opening Sunday At Roland Garros
Roger Federer will make his return to Roland Garros for the first time in four years on opening Sunday at the clay-court Grand Slam, playing the third match on Court Philippe-Chatrier against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. Stefanos Tsitsipas will kick off men’s action on the court against Germany’s Maximilian Marterer, while Kei Nishikori headlines men's action on Court Suzanne Lenglen against French wild card Quentin Halys.
Third seed Federer arrives with a 65-16 record at this event. The 2009 champion showed promising signs this month in reaching the quarter-finals of his first two clay-court tournaments since 2016. Federer held match points against Dominic Thiem before falling in three sets in Madrid and saved two match points in his third-round Internazionali BNL d'Italia win over Borna Coric. Sonego, 24, came through qualifying to reach the quarter-finals in Monte-Carlo. The Italian is competing in his first main draw in Paris.
Tsitsipas was unseeded last year in Paris, but arrives this year as the sixth seed. The Greek’s outstanding European clay swing includes a stunning victory over Rafael Nadal en route to a runner-up finish in Madrid (l. to Djokovic), a semi-final showing in Rome and his fourth ATP Tour title at the Millennium Estoril Open (d. Cuevas). Marterer reached the fourth round here last year, marking the German’s best showing at a Grand Slam.
Seventh seed Nishikori has reached at least the fourth round in his past four appearances in Paris. The Japanese star has produced consistent results on clay this season that include reaching the semi-finals at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and quarter-finals in Rome. The 22-year-old Halys is making his fourth main draw appearance at this event.
Other notable matches on Sunday include eleventh-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic taking on Italian Thomas Fabbiano and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov squaring off with Serbian Janko Tipsarevic. Tipsarevic leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head 4-2, though Dimitrov won their first-round clash in January at the Australian Open.
