Fognini/Lindstedt Seal Shenzhen Crown
Rookie duo enjoys instant success
First-time duo Fabio Fognini and Robert Lindstedt proved to be an unbeatable combination at the Shenzhen Open, winning their first ATP World Tour doubles title together with a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory over second seeds Oliver Marach and Fabrice Martin in the final on Sunday.
"We're really, really happy," said Fognini. "I haven't enjoyed myself this much in doubles in a long time. Thanks to Rob for playing with me. It was a great week."
"I think we both played really, really well from the first match on," said Lindstedt. "The only set we lost was very tight as well (against the top seeds). We played some really good teams this week and it was really fun to play."
Fognini and Lindstedt toppled No. 1 seeds Treat Huey and Max Mirnyi in the first round and from there, did not look back. In the final, they fought back from an early 1-3 deficit to take the first set in a tie-break. A break in the eighth game of the second set sealed victory for the Italian/Swedish pair in 84 minutes.
Fognini, who last year qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals alongside Simone Bolelli, captured his fourth ATP World Tour doubles title. Lindstedt lifted the 20th trophy of his illustrious doubles career.
Marach and Martin were chasing their third title of the season after victories in Chennai and Delray Beach. They also finished runners-up in Stuttgart.
