Fritz Rallies From Two Sets Down To Beat Anderson
Taylor Fritz has won two five-set matches in his young career, and both times he's come back from two sets down.
The 22-year-old American rallied to beat former World No. 5 Kevin Anderson 4-6, 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday night at the Australian Open. Fritz hit 55 winners to 27 unforced errors and broke the South African five times to make the third round at a Grand Slam for the third time (2019 Australian Open, 2018 US Open).
“I felt it was really unlucky to not win the second. I had lots of chances to break," said Fritz, who was zero for five on break points in the second set. “I just told myself after I won the third, 'I'm only going to be playing better."
"That was huge for me. He played a really tough five setter just the other day and then obviously coming back... going back-to-back five setters is going to be tougher for him than usual," Fritz said. "I felt fresh, so I just told myself, 'I have to keep running'."
Fritz has never reached the fourth round at a Grand Slam. The 2019 Eastbourne champion will face World No. 5 Dominic Thiem in the third round.
