Gasquet Advances To Wimbledon Second Round
Gasquet is one of 16 Frenchmen in the draw this year
Seventh seed Richard Gasquet recorded his 20th match win of the season on Tuesday by beating Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 12 minutes at The Championships. He will next play Marcel Granollers or Victor Estrella Burgos in the second round.
Gasquet got off to the best possible start, opening up a 3-0 lead. Despite losing his serve to 30 at 4-2, the Frenchman broke for a second time in the first set. Gasquet took a 3-2 lead in the second set, then saved three break points in a 17-point sixth game. He failed to convert five break point opportunities for a 3-0 advantage in the third set as Bedene, currently No. 56 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, clung on in a 19-point hold. Gasquet broke in the final game with a fine high backhand volley winner.
"I think I played well," said the Frenchman. "To win in three sets, it's a good match for me. I'm very happy with the way I played because I know he's a dangerous player." Gasquet is a two-time semi-finalist at the All England Club, having reached the last four in 2007 (l. to Federer) and last year (l. to Djokovic). He is now 26-10 overall at Wimbledon. Bedene had been bidding to secure his 50th tour-level match win.
Elswhere, Gasquet's compatriot, No. 12 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, struck 41 winners past Inigo Cervantes in a 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-4 victory. "I'm very satisfied," said Tsonga. "It's good to be back on court after this month out. It was not easy, of course, because when you haven't played for a while, you are always looking for the good shot." The 2011-2012 semi-finalist next challenges Taro Daniel or Juan Monaco.
Victor Troicki, the No. 25 seed, who reached the Wimbledon fourth round in 2012 and 2015, knocked out qualifier Tristan Lamasine 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 36 minutes. He now faces Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who overcame Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
