Karlovic Strikes Record 45 Aces In Halle

Ivo Karlovic hits a record number of aces in a best-of-three sets match Friday.

Ivo Karlovic hit a record 45 aces in a best-of-three set match Friday to book a spot in the GERRY WEBER OPEN semi-finals.

The 36-year-old Croatian produced a service masterclass to blast past Tomas Berdych, the third seed and 2007 titlist, in a 7-5, 6-7(8), 6-3 victory over two hours and 12 minutes. It was his second Top 10 victory of 2015, following on from his win over World No. 1 Novak Djokovic at Doha in the first week of the season.

"I’m extremely happy about the record," said Karlovic. "Hitting aces helps a lot, you can avoid the volleys. I was surprised when I was told on court after the match how many aces I hit. I didn’t know it was that many. Hopefully I can continue like that in the semi-final."

Eighth seed Karlovic has now hit 94 aces in his three matches this week at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament. He pounded down 28 aces against Santiago Giraldo and followed up with 21 aces against Alexander Zverev.

Kevin Anderson, speaking at the Aegon Championships in London, said, "The guy has an amazing serve. It's a surface that definitely suits a serve. I think it's definitely just favourable serving conditions, which I think has resulted in the amount of aces being quite high."

Karlovic has now hit 9,593 aces in 511 matches over the course of his career. He is now just 90 aces behind all-time leader Goran Ivanisevic, his Croatian compatriot, who struck 10,183 aces in 895 matches. View More Aces Stats

He will now face top seed and seven-time champion Roger Federer or Florian Mayer.

Later in the day, second seed Kei Nishikori defeated Jerzy Janowicz 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 Friday for a place in the semi-finals against fourth seed Gael Monfils or Andreas Seppi.
