Treat Huey and Henri Kontinen defeated top seeds Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram 7-6(4), 6-2 to win the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur title on Sunday. It was the Filipino-Finnish partnership’s eighth consecutive win and second title in as many weeks (d. Knowle/Peya in St. Petersburg). The pair will take home 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points and $51,820, while their opponents will receive 150 points and $27,240.

“It’s definitely not what we expected when we teamed up two weeks ago,” said Kontinen of the tandem’s immediate success. “We have been playing well and it’s very important to get along on and off the court.”

“Despite the score, the match was very close,” noted Huey. “Henri hit an unbelievable return for us to come back in the first set. It came down to one or two points and we played well on points that mattered in the end.”

The match could have turned out differently had Huey/Kontinen not won a sudden-death point on the Klaasen/Ram serve at 4-5, 40/40. The top seeds had broken serve in the previous game, and was a shot away from claiming the first set. In the end, Huey/Kontinen broke back and took the opening set in the tie-break. They raced to a 5-2 lead in the second set and closed out the win on their first match point.

For Huey, it was a third title of season in four finals. In May, he won in Estoril, partnering Scott Lipsky. As for Kontinen, it was a career-best fifth title of the season (Barcelona, Marseille and Zagreb w/Draganja; St. Petersburg w/Huey).

“From here, we are going to Tokyo and we will play Tuesday or Wednesday,” added Huey. “At some point we will lose a match, but it’d be pretty cool to go undefeated forever.”
