Polasek/Dodig End Debut Season With Win In London
“It’s awesome to win here. The atmosphere throughout the week has been great,” Polasek said. “It’s been an unbelievable journey. I’m really happy we can finish the season with a win here. There’s no better feeling.”
The eighth seeds, who end their first team appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals with a 1-2 record, fired 19 aces to extend their unbeaten FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Klaasen and Venus to three matches. The Croatian-Slovakian duo finishes its debut season as a team with a 27-11 record. Dodig and Polasek made their team debut at the Turkish Airlines Open Antalya in June, before capturing trophies at ATP Masters 1000-level in Cincinnati and ATP 500-level in Beijing.
“I think we had an amazing season. We played 11 tournaments together and now we’re here in London,” Dodig said. “To close the season with a win here is a great feeling. We’re looking forward to next year.”
After aggressive play from Klaasen earned the fifth seeds an early break, Dodig and Polasek recovered quickly and levelled the score. The Cincinnati titlists capitalised on a series of unforced errors to break Klaasen’s serve and reach 4-4.
The eighth seeds trailed Klaasen and Venus 4/3 in the tie-break, but Dodig served with power and Polasek fired back-to-back winners to take the opener after 50 minutes. Polasek showcased great reaction skills to earn the only break of the second set at 2-2 and soon fired an ace down the T to clinch the win after 86 minutes.
Despite suffering their first loss at this year’s event, Klaasen and Venus win Group Jonas Bjorkman with a 2-1 record. The fifth seeds move through to the semi-finals at The O2 for the first time and will face the second-placed team from Group Max Mirnyi in the last four on Saturday.
