Thompson through to second round

On his fourth visit to the Sydney International, Martin Klizan earned his first win at the event in dramatic fashion on Sunday.

The World No. 41, who lifted his sixth tour-level trophy in Kitzbuhel last year (d. Istomin), needed two hours and 41 minutes to overcome 19-year-old wild card Alexei Popyrin 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(5), winning 79 per cent of first-serve points (48/61) en route to victory. Klizan will next face Brisbane International semi-finalist Jeremy Chardy or eighth seed Andreas Seppi for a place in the quarter-finals.

Aussie wild card Jordan Thompson also booked his place in the second round, beating Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-3 to reach the last 16 in Sydney for the third time. The World No. 72 saved all seven break points he faced and converted each of his three break opportunities in a clinical 78-minute victory. Thompson will meet defending champion and second seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round.
