Borna Coric tops Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the Marrakech quarter-finals on Friday.

Coric Upsets Second Seed For Marrakech SF

Former Stars of Tomorrow to face off for place in the final

Borna Coric ousted second seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas to reach the semi-finals of the Grand Prix Hassan II on Friday. The 20-year-old #NextGenATP player from Croatia came back from a set down to advance with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory in two hours and 30 minutes.

Coric, who last reached an ATP World Tour semi-final at this tournament a year ago, next faces Jiri Vesely, whom he leads 2-0 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series. The two players are both past winners of the ATP Star of Tomorrow presented by Emirates award, with Vesely holding the distinction in 2013 and Coric the following year.

In his quarter-final, the 23-year-old Vesely fired nine aces and saved three of the four break points he faced to prevail over fifth seed Paolo Lorenzi 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).

“I didn’t get off to a good start. Paolo is a great clay-court player and I was expecting a tough match,” said Vesely. “I always feel great in Morocco and I like to start the clay-court season here. The semi-final will be another tough match. Coric won a close match against Ramos-Vinolas, so I hope that I can play well again tomorrow.”

Philipp Kohlschreiber topped German countryman Jan-Lennard Struff 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to reach the last four. The third seed saved eight of the nine break points he faced to prevail in two hours and eight minutes and improve his FedEx ATP Head2Head with Struff to 3-2. Saturday’s semi-final will be Kohlschreiber’s first at that stage since last October in Moscow.

He next meets sixth-seeded Frenchman Benoit Paire, who handed Tommy Robredo his earliest exit at this ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament. Paire fired 10 aces and capitalised on four of his six break points en route to the 6-2, 6-4 victory. Robredo had reached the final in his two previous appearances at the Grand Prix Hassan II, and had upset top seed Grigor Dimitrov on Thursday.

Granollers Records 300th Doubles Win

Marcel Granollers recorded a personal milestone 300th doubles match win as he and partner Marc Lopez advanced to the final in Marrakech. The second-seeded Spanish team defeated fourth seeds Florin Mergea and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi 7-6(9), 6-7(4), 10-4 to reach the championship match. They will face Dominic Inglot and Mate Pavic, who overcame top seeds Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram 3-6, 7-6(2), 10-8 in 96 minutes.
