Russian Daniil Medvedev wasted little time reaching the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday. The 15th seed surrendered only four games against South African Lloyd Harris to advance 6-1, 6-2, 6-1.

The Brisbane finalist (l. to Nishikori) has never made the fourth round at a Grand Slam. But Medvedev had his breakthrough season a year ago, going 3-0 in ATP Tour finals at the Sydney International, Winston-Salem Open and Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo.

The 22-year-old will next meet American Ryan Harrison, who beat Czech Jiri Vesely 6-0, 7-5, 6-3 for his first win of 2019. Harrison hit 20 aces and won 95 per cent of his first-serve points (40/42).

David Goffin, the 21st seed, picked up his first victory since 1 September by routing Chile's Christian Garin in 88 minutes 6-0, 6-2, 6-2. Goffin fell in his season opener at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha to Lithuania's Ricardas Berankis

The 28-year-old Goffin, who will meet Marius Copil of Romania in the second round, aborted his 2018 campaign in early October because of pain in his right elbow. World No. 61 Copil beat Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 45 minutes.
