Murray/Skupski Roll In US Open Debut

Brits looking for a deep run at second Slam together

Brits Jamie Murray/Neal Skupski got off to a winning start on Thursday at the US Open, beating American wild cards Robert Galloway/Nathaniel Lammons 6-3, 6-2 to reach the second round in New York.

Murray/Skupski, the 15th seeds, hit 21 winners and committed only nine unforced errors in the first-round win. The two are playing in only their second Grand Slam tournament together after joining forces in June during the grass-court season. Murray/Skupski will face Ricardas Berankis/Juan Ignacio Londero or another American wild card team in Maxime Cressy/Keegan Smith.

Jozef Kovalik/Albert Ramos-Vinolas fought past Robert Lindstedt/Philipp Oswald 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) and will face the winner of second seeds Lukasz Kubot/Marcelo Melo and Denys Molchanov/Artem Sitak.

Leonardo Mayer/Joao Sousa raced past Andres Molteni/Igor Zelenay 6-2, 6-4 and will meet 14th seeds Henri Kontinen/John Peers, who beat Santiago Gonzalez/Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-3.

In other action, Roberto Carballes Baena/Federico Delbonis beat Hugo Nys/Divij Sharan 6-4, 6-4 and will face the winner of seventh seeds Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan and Hubert Hurkacz/Vasek Pospisil.

Austin Krajicek/Edouard Roger-Vasselin prevailed past Serbians Laslo Djere/Janko Tipsarevic 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-2. The American-Frenchman combination will next play Jack Sock/Jackson Withrow, who defeated 11th seeds Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek 6-4, 7-6(2).

Meanwhile, on Court 15, Tim Smyczek played the final match of his professional career, bidding farewell alongside countryman Mitchell Krueger. The Americans were defeated by teenagers Toby Alex Kodat and Martin Damm 7-6(6), 7-5. The 31-year-old Smyczek reached a career-high singles ATP Ranking of No. 68 and lifted seven ATP Challenger Tour trophies. His best result in a Grand Slam came at the US Open in 2013, when he reached the third round.
