Second seeds lift 10th tour-level team title

Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares lifted their second Sydney International trophy on Saturday, beating Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 6-4, 6-3.

The second seeds, who captured their maiden team title at the event in 2016, saved seven of eight break points and won 73 per cent of first-serve points (27/37) to earn their 10th tour-level trophy as a team after 75 minutes.

"[It was] a great week for us in Sydney," said Murray." [It is the] perfect preparation to win a tournament going into the Australian Open. We played a lot of good tennis this week and beat a lot of good teams."

With their fourth straight win over Cabal and Farah, Murray and Soares improve to 6-2 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series against the Colombian duo. Murray has won 23 doubles crowns from 46 tour-level finals, while Soares has lifted 30 tour-level doubles trophies. It is the 12th straight year that the 36-year-old Brazilian has captured at least one tour-level doubles title.

"It feels great. I think [it was an] important week for us just before a Grand Slam," said Soares. "It was a very tough tournament from day one... We had a very tough draw but managed to play some great tennis every match. [I am] very happy with that."

Cabal and Farah were bidding to clinch their 12th tour-level team title. The top seeds, who reached the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time in 2018, did not drop a set en route to the championship match in Sydney.

Murray and Soares receive 250 ATP Doubles Ranking points and share $29,860 in prize money for lifting the trophy. Cabal and Farah earn 150 points and split $15,300.

The British-Brazilian partnership, which advanced to its third straight Nitto ATP Finals semi-final in 2018, will now aim to repeat its 2016 Sydney-Australian Open double in Melbourne.

"We finished the year strong last year and it's nice to be back, already playing some good tennis and looking forward to what is ahead in 2019," said Soares.
