The 2018 champions dropped just four points on serve (40/44) to move through to the quarter-finals after 50 minutes. Mahut/Herbert improved to 7-1 at the opening ATP 500 event of the year, having also reached the semi-finals on their tournament debut as a team in 2017.
Mahut, a three-time champion in Rotterdam, and Herbert will meet Fabio Fognini/Robin Haase as they bid to reach their third semi-final in as many team appearances in Rotterdam. Fognini/Haase edged past Rolex Paris Masters finalists Karen Khachanov/Andrey Rublev 7-6(1), 7-6(11) on Monday.
In the final first-round match, Raven Klaasen/Oliver Marach beat Dutch wild cards Sander Arends/David Pel 6-3, 7-5 in 67 minutes. Klaasen/Marach will face Felix Auger-Aliassime/Hubert Hurkacz for a spot in the semi-finals. Auger-Aliassime/Hurkacz overcame third seeds Wesley Koolhof/Nikola Mektic 6-3, 7-6(9) on Monday.
At the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires, fourth seeds Marcelo Demoliner/Matwe Middelkoop weathered a wild match with eight service breaks to defeat Marco Cecchinato/Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4, 6-4. Joining them in the quarter-finals are Pablo Cuevas/Hugo Dellien, who didn't drop serve in their 6-4, 6-4 win against Leonardo Mayer/Andres Molteni. Guillermo Duran/Juan Ignacio Londero reached the last eight with a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Salvatore Caruso/Lorenzo Sonego.
First-round action at the New York Open saw Roman Jebavy/Frederik Nielsen score the upset of the day with their 6-4, 6-4 win against second seeds Santiago Gonzalez/Ken Skupski. Marcelo Arevalo/Jonny O'Mara also provided an upset by outlasting third seeds Marcus Daniell/Philipp Oswald 6-3, 4-6, 10-8. Nikola Cacic/Hugo Nys rallied to defeat Miomir Kecmanovic/Ante Pavic 5-7, 7-5, 10-6 and Dominic Inglot/Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi moved past John Isner/Tommy Paul 6-4, 7-6(3).
