Dominic Thiem will try to win his first Grand Slam title on Sunday when he faces Rafael Nadal in Paris.

How Thiem Can Enter The Year-End No. 1 Conversation

Thiem could climb to third in the Race with a win Sunday

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal entered Roland Garros with a healthy lead ahead of the rest of the field in the ATP Race To London. But Dominic Thiem could make the conversation about the chase for the year-end No. 1 ATP Ranking more interesting if he defeats Nadal on Sunday to win his first Grand Slam title.

If Thiem is able to upset the 11-time Roland Garros champion to become the second Austrian man to capture a major trophy, the 25-year-old will climb into third in the Race, moving to within striking distance of Djokovic and Nadal as the ATP Tour shifts to grass.

Thiem, who currently has 3,305 points on the year, would earn an additional 800 by triumphing in the championship match, which would give him 4,105, sending him ahead of Roger Federer in the Race. Djokovic would maintain his lead with 4,725 points, and Nadal would be just behind with 4,705.

Thiem's Standing In The ATP Race To London After Roland Garros

 Year  Standing
 2019  No. 3 or No. 4
 2018  No. 5
 2017  No. 3
 2016  No. 5
 2015  No. 26

Last year, after reaching his maiden major final at Roland Garros, Thiem climbed to fifth place in the Race. In 2017, he was third in the Race after the year’s second Slam, but trailed No. 1 Nadal by 3,750 points.

Nadal can cause a shakeup of his own if he lifts his 12th Coupe des Mousquetaires. The Spaniard would move to 5,505 points, taking a 780-point lead over Djokovic, who has led the Race since winning the Australian Open. If Nadal does so, it will be the third straight year he has led the Race after Roland Garros.
