Hurkacz Stuns Tsitsipas For Another Top 10 Win
The 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals qualifier was clutch under pressure against the World No. 5, saving nine of 10 break points, including all four in the third set. Hurkacz improved to 4-4 against the Top 10 in 2019, and it's his third Top 10 win at a hard-court ATP Masters 1000 event.
"It's a huge win. Stefanos is an amazing player... I'm so happy that I won," Hurkacz said. "I think I served really well today, that helped me a lot."
The 22-year-old Pole upset Kei Nishikori in Indian Wells (and Dubai) and BNP Paribas Open titlist Dominic Thiem in Miami. Hurkacz will next face 16th seed Gael Monfils, who saved a set point at 5/6 in the second-set tie-break to beat qualifier Ilya Ivashka of Belarus 6-3, 7-6(6).
Richard Gasquet earned one of the biggest wins of his season, a 6-7(6), 6-2, 7-6(4) win against the fifth-seeded Nishikori. The Japanese has the best deciding set win percentage in the Open Era (74%, 132-46), but Gasquet played fearlessly in the third-set tie-break, attacking and striking a barrage of backhands for the upset.
The 33-year-old underwent groin surgery in January and has seen his ATP Ranking slip to No. 66. But Gasquet will have a chance to keep climbing the ATP Rankings when he next meets Wimbledon semi-finalist Roberto Bautista Agut. The 10th-seeded Spaniard won 55 per cent of his second-serve points and beat Los Cabos champion Diego Schwartzman 6-2, 7-5.
