Read & Watch: First To 50, Zverev Ends Haase Spell With Milestone Win
Robin Haase's recent reign over Alexander Zverev ended on Wednesday at the Swiss Indoors Basel. The second-seeded Zverev swept past the Dutchman 6-4, 7-5 to reach the second round of the ATP World Tour 500-level event and become the first player to earn 50 victories this season (50-16).
As a 17-year-old, Zverev beat Haase for his first ATP World Tour win in Hamburg in 2014. But Haase has made Zverev work since then, pushing him to five sets at the 2017 Australian Open and beating him at the 2017 Rolex Paris Masters and 2018 Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, both ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events.
The German, however, broke twice in the opener, including in the 10th game to take the set after leading 4-1. Haase fell behind 1-4 in the second set as well, but the 31-year-old climbed back, forcing Zverev to a 12th game, where the German broke once more to advance. The Nitto ATP Finals qualifier will next meet 19-year-old Aussie qualifier Alexei Popyrin.
Romanian qualifier Marius Copil recorded his first Top 10 win, upsetting 2016 champion and Nitto ATP Finals hopeful Marin Cilic 7-5, 7-6(2). Copil, No. 93 in the ATP Rankings, hit 21 aces to upset the Croatian for the second time (2-2 FedEx ATP Head2Head series).
The 28-year-old right-hander had been 0-6 against Top 10 players. His previous win against Cilic came at the 2012 China Open in Beijing. Copil had lost to Cilic twice this year, both on hard courts (Cincinnati, US Open).
The 6'5” right-hander will meet American wild card Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals. The Next Gen ATP Finals qualifier eliminated home favourite Henri Laaksonen 6-2, 7-5. The 20-year-old is looking to reach his first ATP World Tour 500-level semi-final.
