Joao Fonseca will miss upcoming events at the Swiss Indoors Basel and the Rolex Paris Masters due to injury, bringing his 2026 season to an early end. The Brazilian shared the news via social media Saturday.
"Hey everyone, just dropping by to update you on the rest of the season. As you saw, I skipped the Asian swing to focus on my recovery," Fonseca said in a video he posted on Instagram. "My plan was to return during the European swing. But after talking with my team, I realised I’m still not 100% ready to compete at the level I’d like.
"And there is no need to rush things. So, we decided to prioritise my health and put all focus on the 2027 season. Thank you so much for the support and love always. See you all on the court soon."
The Brazilian has not competed since his Davis Cup win last month. In August, the former Next Gen ATP Finals champion withdrew before his third-round match in Cincinnati and later pulled out of the US Open. Fonseca ends his year holding a 20-13 record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, with his best result a quarter-final run at Roland Garros.
The No. 29 player in the PIF ATP Rankings Fonseca, has fond memories in Basel, having lifted his maiden ATP 500 trophy at the event last season. Fonseca made his debut in Paris last year, reaching the second round.
Novak Djokovic will headline a star-studded field in Basel, with Felix Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz also set to compete at the indoor event, held from 26 October to 1 November.
