Rafael Jodar has withdrawn from the HSBC Championships in London, it was confirmed on Monday.
The #NextGenATP Spaniard reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros earlier this month and was set to make his debut at the grass-court ATP 500 event against Peruvian Ignacio Buse.
"I’m very sorry that I won’t be able to play at Queen’s this week," Jodar wrote on social media. "Over the last few training sessions, I’ve been experiencing some discomfort in my abdominal area and, after consulting with the specialists, we’ve made the decision not to compete so that I can recover properly and get back on court as soon as possible. Thank you everyone who came to say hello these past days at Queens. I hope to be back stronger next year!"
The 19-year-old, who has never previously played a tour-level match on grass, is next scheduled to play at the ATP 250 tournament in Eastbourne next week.
Jodar was outside the Top 600 in the PIF ATP Rankings just 12 months ago, but has since soared to the Top 30. The Spaniard is 24-10 on the season according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, highlighted by his title run in Marrakech.
Alex de Minaur and last year’s finalist Jiri Lehecka are the top two seeds at The Queen’s Club this week. Former champions Tommy Paul and Marin Cilic are also in the draw, with Cameron Norrie leading home hopes.
