Fifty years after winning his second of five US Open titles, ATP No. 1 Club member Jimmy Connors was back at the hard-court major Sunday.
The American, who triumphed in 1974, 1976, 1978, 1982 and 1983, presented the trophy to Alexander Zverev, who defeated Ben Shelton in the championship match to claim his second Grand Slam crown.
Mats Wilander, who lifted the US Open title in 1988, and two-time champion Andre Agassi were also in attendance Sunday for the title clash between Zverev and Shelton.
Four-time singles winner John McEnroe was a part of the commentary team throughout the tournament and was calling the final for ESPN, while 2003 winner Andy Roddick provided analysis from ESPN's desk. Jim Courier was also on commentary duty and hosted the post-match trophy celebration ceremony inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Ahead of the tournament, five-time champion Roger Federer was also present in Flushing Meadows. The Swiss legend played an exhibition with fellow No. 1 club members Roddick, McEnroe and Agassi.
Zverev's victory over Shelton gave him his second major title, three months after he won his first at Roland Garros. The 29-year-old German is now just the fourth man in the Open Era to win his first two Grand Slam titles in the same season. Shelton, who was competing in his first Grand Slam final, was bidding to become the first American man since Roddick in 2003 to win the US Open trophy.
