Top seed Alexander Zverev will need to be at it from the off if he is to enjoy a deep run at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC in Acapulco.

The German will open against World No. 34 and Delray Beach semi-finalist Matteo Arnaldi in the first round and will meet Dallas champion Denis Shapovalov in the second round should he win and the Canadian overcome former Top 10 star Cameron Norrie.

Delray Beach champion Miomir Kecmanovic, eighth seed Tomas Machac or #NextGenATP star Jakub Mensik are potential quarter-final opponents for Zverev at the hard-court event. Machac reached the quarter-finals in Dallas earlier this month, while Mensik has earned five Top 10 wins in just one year on Tour. Machac faces Mensik in an-all Czech first-round clash.

It All Adds Up

Fourth seed Holger Rune or fifth seed Ben Shelton are seeded to play the 2021 champion Zverev in the semis. Rune plays Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round and Shelton takes on Flavio Cobolli.

The No. 12 in the PIF ATP Rankings Rune is a two-time semi-finalist in Acapulco and Shelton reached the quarters last year. Zverev leads Rune 3-1 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series and holds a 1-0 advantage against Shelton.

In the bottom half, second seed Casper Ruud begins against Arthur Rinderknech and is seeded to play American Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-finals. Ruud advanced to the title match in Mexico last season and is chasing his first title of the year.

Third seed Tommy Paul is in the same section as sixth seed Lorenzo Musetti. Both start against a qualifier.
