In tough times for Acapulco, the tennis community continues to rally to the city’s cause.

As one of the supporting partners of Mexican non-profit organisation Construyendo, Mextenis and the ATP 500 event it organises, the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC, have been at the heart of an impactful rebuilding effort following the devastating impact of Hurricane Otis in October 2023.

Nearly 18 months on from the disaster, Construyendo has delivered 73 newly built homes to families affected, with 22 more already under construction and 30 more about to begin. The organisation’s plans for the Puerto Marqués area also include the construction of a school and a chapel.

Construyendo’s project is not just about rebuilding. It also involves providing emotional support for the community, a big part of which is listening to and working with the community on the rebuilding works. Architectural firm Manuel Cervantes Estudio has supported the organisation to help ensure the needs of benefitting families are met. Cervantes’ tailored house designs, which improve ventilation and hurricane resistance, have won two architecture awards.

It is not the first time that Mextenis and the Acapulco ATP 500 have joined forces for good with Construyendo: After Hurricanes Ingrid and Manuel damaged a local coffee-growing community called El Edén in 2013, a joint project was launched to repair the damage. Today, the coffee stalls on the tournament site at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC are all run by the community of El Edén.

With post-Hurricane Otis reconstruction work ongoing, the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC remains a powerful platform for Mextenis, and by extension Construyendo, to increase awareness of the rebuilding work being done in Acapulco and surrounding areas.

The ATP and its players have also offered their support to the rebuilding effort. At the 2024 edition of the ATP 500, Felix Auger-Aliassime volunteered with Construyendo to help work on a house, while Stefanos Tsitsipas pledged $1000 USD for each of the 15 aces he hit during the tournament. The ATP also later announced a $10,000 USD donation to Construyendo.
