Carlos Alcaraz is on the doorstep of clinching ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honours.
If the Spaniard wins one more match at the Nitto ATP Finals, he will claim the achievement for the second time. He finished year-end No. 1 in 2022.
“I will try not to think about it,” Alcaraz said after moving to 2-0 in Jimmy Connors Group action Tuesday in Turin. “It’s going to be a really big match for me. I will try not to let the nerves play a bad time in the match. I will think about my goals, about feeling much better than today.”
Alcaraz is not out of luck if he loses his final round-robin match against home favourite Lorenzo Musetti. Even if the 22-year-old finishes the group with a 2-1 record, he will have a chance to guarantee himself year-end No. 1 if he qualifies for the semi-finals and wins that match.
The Spaniard is trying to become just the 11th player to become ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF more than once.
Sinner must win the Nitto ATP Finals as an undefeated champion to give himself a chance to earn his second consecutive year-end No. 1 finish. If the Italian loses one match — he next faces Alexander Zverev Wednesday — the battle will also be over.
