Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton are among the ATP Tour stars who have shared farewell messages for Gael Monfils, who announced his retirement from professional tennis on Monday.
The Frenchman, who reached a career-high No. 6 in the PIF ATP Rankings, last competed at the US Open in September. Monfils bids goodbye to the Tour having won 13 ATP Tour titles and notched 588 tour-level match wins.
"Gael, thank you for everything," Alcaraz said. "For me, you were a true inspiration, a great athlete. Most important thing, a great person off the court. That is why you are a great inspiration for the young talent. Thank you very much and we will miss you."
Zverev, who faced Monfils four times in their Lexus ATP Head2Head rivalry, added: "Thanks for everything you have done. For me, you’re an absolute magician, the highlight reel on the court and somebody that everybody enjoyed watching for the past twenty-plus years."
Shelton was also full of words of appreciation and paid tribute to the 40-year-old.
"For me, you were like a big brother, a friend and a jokester, one of my favourite guys to see in the locker room or practice with on the court, the American shared. “You put smiles on everyone’s faces, whether it was other players, fans, watching you in an arena."
Daniil Medvedev, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alex de Minaur also shared their messages. Watch the full video below with messages for Monfils:
