Guido Andreozzi and Theo Arribage won their first ATP Tour doubles title as a pair Sunday at the IEB+ Argentina Open, beating Brazilian third seeds Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 in the final at the ATP 250.
The Buenos Aires trophy is Andreozzi's second at tour-level and Arribage's first. Argentina's Andreozzi is the 12th different man from the home nation to claim the doubles crown, while Arribage is the event's first French doubles champion.
Both players are up to career highs in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Rankings behind their success, with Andreozzi up six places this week to No. 50 and Arribage up eight places to No. 60.
In Sunday's final, both teams converted on three break points, according to Infosys ATP Stats. A total of 21 break points were on offer, 12 for the champions and nine for Matos/Melo. The biggest statistical edge for Andreozzi/Arribage was their 65 per cent (11/17) win rate on second serve, trumping the Brazilians' 41 per cent (7/17).
A dramatic opening set saw Andreozzi/Arribage miss out on six break points after leading 5-2, only for them to recover to close out the set from 5-5. Matos/Melo then nearly saw their own 5-2 lead erased in the second set before serving it out at the second time of asking.
In the Match Tie-break, Andreozzi/Arribage battled back from 0/3 and 4/6 to win, claiming six of the match's final seven points to clinch the title.
The duo was competing in just its third ATP Tour event, having made its tour-level debut earlier this season in Adelaide. Now 5-2 at that level, the pair also won an ATP Challenger Tour title last season in Szczecin.
