Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos could hardly have faced a more difficult path through the draw at the Mutua Madrid Open, but the pair will nonetheless leave the Spanish capital with its seventh ATP Masters 1000 trophy.
Granollers and Zeballos defeated top seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday afternoon to win their second Madrid title following their 2021 triumph. Having already defeated second seeds Harri Heliovaara/Henry Patten in the quarter-finals and third seeds Kevin Krawietz/Tim Puetz in the semi-finals, Granollers and Zeballos became just the second team in Masters 1000 history to defeat the three highest-seeded teams en route to the trophy.

“We are really happy. It’s unbelievable to win here again,” said home favourite Granollers. “One of the biggest tournaments in the world. To do it at home, it’s so nice. Thank you to Horacio for playing that good.”
Winning the Madrid title without dropping a set en route was a belated birthday present for Argentine Zeballos, who turned 40 earlier in the tournament.
“We are like wine,” joked Zeballos. “It’s a great feeling. We beat the best teams. The level is like this. Every match is so close. You can lose in the first round, you can win the tournament. It’s so close. I’m really happy we are playing against these teams that are playing so good. It [brings] really good confidence for us.”
Saturday’s final was not all plain sailing for Granollers and Zeballos, who rallied from 0-3 in the second set to complete their win. The duo converted three of five break points it earned overall, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to improve their Lexus ATP Head2Head record against Arevalo and Pavic to 4-1.
With their victory in Madrid, Granollers and Zeballos have also surged 22 spots to eighth in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings, which Arevalo and Pavic currently lead. The top eight doubles pairs at the end of the season will compete at November’s Nitto ATP Finals.
