Top seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic made a strong start to their BNP Paribas Open campaign on Sunday, avoiding the recent upset trend in Indian Wells. The El Salvadoran-Croatian pair beat Argentines Sebastian Baez and Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4 on the first day of doubles action at the ATP Masters 1000.
With the help of seven aces and a 91 per cent win rate on first serve, the joint-No. 1s in the PIF ATP Doubles Rankings erased the only two break points they faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats. One break in each set was enough to secure the win and set up a second-round matchup with singles stars Jack Draper and Tomas Machac.
Aussies Matthew Ebden and John Peers, reigning Olympic gold medalists, upset third-seeded Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 6-4, 6-4, while Jiri Lehecka and Alejandro Tabilo took out fourth seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 6-2, 6-3.
The doubles shot of the day came from Constantin Frantzen, who thrilled the crowd with an around-the-net-post winner. Unfortunately for the German and his partner Alexander Erler, the show-stopper came in a losing effort as they were beaten 6-4, 7-5 by Sebastian Korda and Jordan Thompson.
