Romain Arneodo and Marc Polmans added a title to the impressive start to their partnership by overcoming Yuki Bhambri and Michael Venus in a hard-fought Gonet Geneva Open championship match.
Competing in just their third event as a team, Arneodo and Polmans rallied for a 3-6, 7-6(2), 10-7 win against third seeds Bhambri and Venus at the clay ATP 250. It was Polmans’ first tour-level trophy, while Arenodo is now a four-time ATP Tour champion.
“It’s amazing. My first ATP 250 win so I’m very happy with the result,” Polmans reflected. “This is a beautiful place. It’s my first time to Geneva, so winning the tournament is always amazing but even just being here has been great.”
Monegasque star Arneodo and Australian Polmans first teamed last month in Barcelona, where they came through qualifying to reach the semi-finals. They subsequently reached the quarter-finals at an ATP Challenger in Bordeaux, before marching to the Geneva title for the loss of just one set. The pair is now 5-1 as a team, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
“It was a great week. I’ve especially enjoyed playing with Marc,” Arneodo said. “I’ve been struggling a few years to find the right partners, and I’m really happy to play with someone that I can call a friend. For me, that is doubles. Playing with a good guy and a good friend, and tennis comes second. Every time we have good chemistry on court, we win, that’s how it works. So I’m really proud that we made it together.”
