Sebastian Baez continued his impressive clay-court form on Sunday at the Gonet Geneva Open, where he moved past Indian Sumit Nagal 7-6(7), 6-3.
The Argentine rallied from a break down in the first set and saved one set point in the first-set tie-break to lead. The fifth seed then did not face a break point on serve in the second set to advance in the pair’s first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting.
Baez leads the Tour in clay-court wins (18) and titles on the surface (two) in 2024. The 23-year-old will continue the quest for his third trophy of the season when he meets Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round after the Spaniard defeated Daniel Altmaier 7-6(2), 6-4.
Baez is making his debut at the ATP 250 event in Geneva. Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud are the top two seeds in Switzerland.
