Carlos Alcaraz will rate his chances of winning a third title at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, but the top seed will have to be at his best early on at the ATP 500 event.
If the No. 3 in the PIF ATP Rankings can move past a qualifier in his opener, he will await the winner of the clash between Acapulco champion Tomas Machac and Frances Tiafoe. Alcaraz could meet fellow Top 10 star Alex de Minaur at the quarter-final stage.
Four-time finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas begins his campaign for a maiden Barcelona trophy against the big-serving Reilly Opelka, with their Lexus ATP Head2Head series tied at 1-1.
On the other side of the draw, defending champion Casper Ruud returns to the site of his maiden ATP 500 title 12 months ago. The second seed, who will look to bounce back from his second-round defeat to Alexei Popyrin at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, takes on a qualifier in his opening match. Ruud will face two-time ATP Tour winner Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard if he can also prevail against a qualifer.
Three-time major winner Stan Wawrinka and former World No. 10 Pablo Carreno Busta, who are competing as wild cards, land in Ruud’s half. Wawrinka takes on Monte-Carlo semi-finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, while Carreno Busta faces seventh seed Arthur Fils.
