Andre Goransson and Sem Verbeek won the biggest trophy of their careers on Sunday when they upset top seeds and home favourites Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 6-4, 6-4 for the BMW Open by Bitpanda title.
“I think [it was the] first 500 on clay even for both of us, so it’s cool to end that with a win,” Verbeek said. “Summing up the week, I think we really grew into the week. We kept analysing match after match what we did well and what we think we could have improved, and I felt like we applied the lessons every match. And in the final, I think we played very solid, very disciplined, so happy with that.”
The champions saved the two break points they faced against the German team, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to claim their second ATP Tour trophy together. Last year they triumphed on grass in Newport.
“I’m thrilled,” Goransson said. “I’m very, very excited for the win.”
Goransson and Verbeek are now seventh in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings. They are pursuing their first Nitto ATP Finals qualification.
Arends/Johnson triumph in Barcelona
Sander Arends and Luke Johnson also earned ATP 500 glory when they defeated Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski 6-3, 6-7(1), 10-6 for the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell trophy.

Already victorious this year in Hong Kong, Arends and Johnson showed their level on clay by surging to the final behind three straight-sets victories before battling past Salisbury and Skupski for the crown.
“This is my actual first time in Barcelona. I’ve never been here before,” Johnson said. “I’ve always said with my partner that we’d sort of come and try to make it a special occasion and I guess this one is now going to be tough to beat.”

Arends and Johnson won just one more total point in the match, but critically claimed half of their return points in the Match Tie-break.
“It’s very special to be here. I think it’s one of the best events that I’ve played,” Arends said. “Joe, Neal, David and everybody who’s involved with you, congrats. I think if you watch from where you came from in the beginning of the year, your line is going up and you’re playing amazing tennis. I mean the second set was very good level, so keep it up and maybe let’s go for another big title.”
