Nicolas Barrientos and Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli’s fledgling partnership hit new heights Saturday, when they claimed the title at the Movistar Chile Open in Santiago.
The Columbian-Indian duo upset top seeds Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match to secure its first title as team. Barrientos and Bollipalli first partnered in Dallas last month and, with their title run at the ATP 250 in Santiago, they improved to 5-2 on the season.
“It feels awesome,” said the 37-year-old Barrientos. “It’s nice to win here in South America. I know it’s not my home country, but I feel at home here. It’s only my second ATP Tour title, my first one with Rithvik. It’s really gratifying for us and really exciting to be able to lift this trophy and have the assurance that we are doing the right thing.”
Barrientos and Bollipalli moved past third seeds and recent Buenos Aires champions Guido Andreozzi and Theo Arribage in the semi-finals before putting on a show in the title tilt. They won 87 per cent (26/30) of first-serve points, and did not face a break point, according to Infosys ATP Stats, en route to a 63-minute victory.
