Matteo Berrettini scored his 200th tour-level win on Saturday at the Mutua Madrid Open, where he roared past Marcos Giron with a clinical comeback.
The 29-year-old came within two points of losing the second-round clash at 6/6 in the second-set tie-break, but produced an inspired turnaround to prevail 6-7(3), 7-6(6), 6-1. Berrettini, former No. 6 in the PIF ATP Rankings and 10-time tour-level champion, is just the eighth Italian man to notch 200 wins.

Berrettini is competing in the main draw in the Spanish capital for just the second time in his career, having reached the final on his debut in 2021, when he fell to Alexander Zverev. The Italian will next face fifth seed Jack Draper, who defeated Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-4.
Returning from a six-month injury layoff in 2024 to clinch three tour-level titles, Berrettini was named ATP’s Comeback Player of the Year. In 2025, he now owns a 12-8 record, highlighted by his maiden triumph over Novak Djokovic in Doha (1-4).
In early action on Saturday, sixth seed Alex de Minaur made it 4-0 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series against Lorenzo Sonego with a 6-2, 6-3 clinic in 75 minutes. After an impressive start to the clay-court season, in which he reached the semi-finals in Monte-Carlo and the quarter-finals in Barcelona, De Minaur is 6-2 on the surface in 2025.
“I was broken in the first game, everything came pretty quickly. But I was very happy with how I settled mentally and how I was able to bounce straight back,” said De Minaur, who next faces 29th seed Denis Shapovalov. “I ended up playing some great tennis.”
Stefanos Tsitsipas rallied past Jan-Lennard Struff 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a battle between two former finalists, setting a third-round clash with 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti. The Greek dropped just two of15 first-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats, in a clinical final-set display.
Tsitsipas will take a 5-1 Lexus ATP Head2Head lead into his contest with Musetti, who moved past Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6(3), 6-2. Yet the Italian won their most recent encounter in the quarter-finals in Monte-Carlo, where Musetti reached the championship match at an ATP Masters 1000 for the first time.
