Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from the Internazionali BNL d’Italia due to illness, the tournament announced Wednesday.

The Italian was set to compete in his fourth tour-level event of the season in Rome, having lifted the trophy in Marrakech last month. Berrettini reached the quarter-finals at the ATP Masters 1000 event in 2020.

“I'm not ready to perform and to give my best on court,” Berrettini said. “I tried everything because this tournament is extra special for me. I have to put away my heart [and] use my brain a little bit more. Think about what's most important for me, which is my health and not getting injured again, not being away from the courts for months potentially. It's with a lot of sadness that I have to pull out.”

On court, rain has suspended action on Day 1. Italians Luciano Darderi and Flavio Cobolli secured first-round victories before rain started falling shortly after 5 p.m. local time.
