Sander Arends and Luke Johnson ended 2024 by winning the title together in Metz. They continued where they left off in the opening week of 2025, triumphing at the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open on Sunday.
In a tight final, the Dutch-British team moved past singles stars Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 to complete a perfect week at the ATP 250 event in Hong Kong.
“The secret to the success is we are a real team,” Arends said. “I trust Luke that he is preparing for his thing, I am preparing for mine and then we have good communication about our roles and responsibilities. In the end it is just executing on court.”
Arends and Johnson won Match Tie-breaks in two of their opening three rounds in Hong Kong and raced into a 7/2 lead in the Match Tie-break against Khachanov and Rublev before sealing victory on their first match point after one hour and 35 minutes.
Arends, 33, is now 3-3 in tour-level doubles finals and is the second Dutch doubles champion in tournament history after Tom Okker in 1975. Johnson, 30, is the first British winner at the hard-court event.
Khachanov and Rublev were aiming to win their second doubles title together. They triumphed at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Madrid in 2023.
Cash/Glasspool triumph in Brisbane
Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool captured their second title as a team on Sunday at the Brisbane International presented by Evie, where they overcame singles champion Jiri Lehecka and #NextGenATP Czech Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-7(2), 10-5.
The fifth seeds, who won together in Tokyo last season, saved all six break points they faced according to Infosys ATP Stats to capture the title at the ATP 250 event in one hour and 40 minutes.
Earlier this week, Britons Cash and Glasspool saved four match points in their second-round before they beat top seeds Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus in the quarter-finals. Cash is now 4-5 in tour-level doubles finals, while Glasspool is 6-10.
