Jenson Brooksby, the 24-year-old American who climbed to a career-high No. 33 in the PIF ATP Rankings in 2022, revealed this week that he lives with autism.
“It’s time for me to share something that I have kept quiet for my entire life,” Brooksby wrote on Instagram Thursday. “I was diagnosed on the severe end of the spectrum as a very young child. I was nonverbal until the age of four. It took 40 hours a week of intensive ABA therapy.
“My mother never gave up and did everything to help me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. I am lucky to have parents who refused to give up.”
The news initially came out in an interview Brooksby conducted with the Associated Press.
“I decided it was time to tell my story,” Brooksby wrote. “I hope this inspires families to never give up.”
The three-time ATP Tour finalist is set to return to action for the first time since the Australian Open in 2023, when Brooksby upset Casper Ruud en route to the third round.
“I am grateful to be returning to pro tennis in Australia,” Brooksby wrote. “See you soon!”
