Roman Andres Burruchaga continued to underline his status as one of the ATP Tour’s most improved players on Wednesday at the Millennium Estoril Open, where he advanced to his third tour-level quarter-final of the season.
The 24-year-old Argentine held off home favourite and Portuguese No. 1 Nuno Borges 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to secure his second straight three-set victory at the clay-court ATP 250 event. Burruchaga, who edged Stan Wawrinka in his opening match on Tuesday, has now claimed 12 of his total 16 tour-level wins this season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, all of which have come on clay.
“I don’t know the exact reason,” Burruchaga said when asked about his improvements. “Maybe I trust myself and my game a little bit more in the key moments. But I am growing up, especially at the highest level. I’m really happy with my level in general.”
Burruchaga reached his first ATP Tour final earlier this season in Houston, where he held three championship points but ultimately fell to Tommy Paul. Now into his third tour-level quarter-final of the year, the World No. 60 will face fourth seed Alexander Blockx.
Blockx closed Wednesday's action in Estoril by saving two match points to overcome lucky loser Kyrian Jacquet 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) in their first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting.
Earlier in the day, Hugo Gaston defeated fellow Frenchman Titouan Droguet 6-0, 6-3 to reach his eighth ATP Tour quarter-final and his first since 2024. The lefty has climbed 10 places to No. 99 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings and is bidding to return to the Top 100 after slipping outside the elite group in March.
Gaston will face another lefty in the last eight: Portuguese wild card Tiago Torres, who is enjoying a breakout week in Estoril. Competing in just his second tour-level match, the World No. 427 upset third seed Alejandro Tabilo 6-4, 6-4 to thrill his home fans.
Torres last year completed four seasons at the University of Texas San Antonio before making his move onto the Tour and, with his run to the quarter-finals on home soil, he has surged 97 spots to No. 330 in the Live Rankings.
