Alexander Zverev’s bid for a quarter-final spot at the Cincinnati Open has resumed after a near-90-minute rain delay at the ATP Masters 1000 event.
The top-seeded Zverev was about to serve at 6-4, 3-4 against home favourite Tommy Paul when the inclement weather arrived at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, but play has now resumed. If he can complete victory against Paul on P & G Stadium Court, Zverev will become just the ninth man to reach 40 Masters 1000 quarter-finals.
Zverev or Paul will face Flavio Cobolli in the last eight in Cincinnati, after the Italian earlier defeated #NextGenATP star Rafael Jodar 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3, while Thiago Agustin Tirante was another early winner: The Argentine upset Jakub Mensik 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
As well as Zverev vs. Paul, the fourth-round clash between Alex de Minaur and Arthur Fils was also halted by the rain. The fifth-seeded De Minaur held serve in the opening game against the 21st seed Fils before the players were forced to leave the court.
ATP Tour stars scheduled to battle for a quarter-final later on Wednesday include second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, who meets 17th seed Frances Tiafoe, and sixth seed Taylor Fritz, who plays qualifier Christopher O’Connell.
