Luciano Darderi rode a Nordea Open rollercoaster on Monday afternoon in Bastad, but the Italian ultimately held firm for a three-set debut victory at the clay ATP 250.
The sixth-seeded Darderi prevailed 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 against Raphael Collignon to advance and set a second-round meeting with Tristan Boyer or Elias Ymer by the Swedish seaside. In his maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head clash with Collignon, Darderi steadied himself after a second-set lapse to seal a two-hour, 10-minute win.
“I have to say congratulations to Raphael. He played the second set amazingly,” said the No. 55 in the PIF ATP Rankings in his on-court interview. “I went a little bit crazy in some games but then in the third set I came back again. I think mentality was the key to the third set.”

Darderi crucially saved two break points from 2-2, 15/40 in the decider and he finished the match having saved six of eight break points he faced overall, according to Infosys ATP Stats. The 23-year-old lifted his second ATP Tour title in April in Marrakech.
In the only other main-draw singles match on Monday’s schedule, Jesper de Jong carved a more straightforward path to the second round. The Dutchman downed home #NextGenATP wild card William Rejchtman Vinciguerra 6-3, 6-2. De Jong will face eighth seed Vit Kopriva or Hugo Dellien next.
