Davidovich Fokina wins second title of 2026 in Chengdu

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina completed a remarkable return to the ATP Tour on Tuesday at the Chengdu Open, where he overcame Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 7-6(7) to claim his second title of the season.

The 27-year-old Spaniard had not competed since Umag in July due to a back injury, but he returned in style in Chengdu, adding another ATP 250 crown to the title he won in Mallorca in June. In a clutch finish, Davidovich Fokina won six of the final seven points from 3/6 down in the tie-break to seal his one-hour, 46-minute victory.

It marks a striking turnaround for Davidovich Fokina, who lost his first five ATP Tour finals. His breakthrough in Mallorca came after a series of painful near misses, including a defeat to Alex de Minaur in Washington last year when he let slip three championship points and was left in tears.

"After that win in Mallorca, I released all the bad energy that I had in finals," Davidovich Fokina said. "I now know how to deal with the pressure in the tight moments. It was a little bit tight in the tie-break, but I knew I would have my chance."

But ahead of Tuesday’s final, Davidovich Fokina spoke openly about the importance of enjoying the moment — a mentality that appeared to have been unlocked by his triumph in Mallorca. And against Hurkacz, the Spaniard showed that the change was more than just words.

Davidovich Fokina applied pressure from the outset, immediately forcing Hurkacz into a 12-minute hold in the opening game. The Spaniard continued to probe the Pole’s serve and, in the seventh game, produced some dazzling court coverage en route to breaking for the first time.

Hurkacz, playing his first final since Geneva last year, responded with greater intensity after dropping the opening set. But Davidovich Fokina again found a way to absorb the pressure and strike back. The Spaniard, who did not face a break point according to Infosys ATP Stats, saved four set points in the second-set tie-break to complete his victory.
