Alex de Minaur suffered a groin injury during his championship-match clash with Novak Djokovic at the China Open on Tuesday, and the Australian has offered an update after he retired trailing 6-7(3), 1-0.
The No. 9 player in the PIF ATP Rankings said that he felt something in his groin during the first set of the ATP 500 final, which was evenly contested.
“I was feeling quite good, then I felt something midway end of the first set,” De Minaur said when asked if he was feeling anything prior to the match. “It gradually got a little worse. [I] felt something in the adductor. I don't know what it is yet. I've got to get some more scans.”
De Minaur is next scheduled to compete at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, which begins Wednesday. The Australian is set to face qualifier Federico Cina or Alex Molcan in his opener.
“My plan is to go to Shanghai and get scans,” De Minaur said.
De Minaur owns a 40-19 record in 2026, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. The Australian won his 11th ATP Tour title in Rotterdam in February and also reached the final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
He is 10th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, aiming to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the third straight year.
“Everything except for the end was really positive,” De Minaur said of his run in Beijing. “There was a lot of good tennis. I played some great stuff. [I] felt amazing on the court. [There’s] a lot of confidence from this first week.”
