Novak Djokovic closed the 2023 ATP Tour season by winning a record-extending seventh Nitto ATP Finals title and celebrating the start of his 400th week at No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings on consecutive days. Roger Federer was the previous record-holder on both fronts, with six ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF trophies and 310 weeks as World No. 1.
On 7 April 2024, during his 419th week at the summit, the Serbian eclipsed another one of Federer’s marks. On that date, Djokovic surpassed the Swiss to become the oldest No. 1 in PIF ATP Rankings history at 36 years and 321 days old. Djokovic extended the record to 37 years and 16 days old by holding onto the top spot through June.
A testament to Djokovic’s unparalleled longevity as well as his talent, this record underscores the Serbian’s meticulous dedication to maintaining his body throughout his career. In addition to his work to improve his tennis and fitness, Djokovic’s attention to his physical and mental recovery have helped him continue to excel as he approaches 40.
Even in his 20s, Djokovic prioritised stretching to an extent rarely seen in professional sport. In 2010, he began a gluten-free diet. Relentless in his wellness quest, Djokovic has become a measuring stick not just for his performance on the court, but for his healthy habits and taking care of his body off it.
As he approaches his 38th birthday on 22 May, Djokovic remains firmly inside the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings. Since he first entered the Top 10 on 19 March 2007, Djokovic has spent just one stretch outside that elite group from November 2017 to July 2018, the result of a right-elbow injury that sidelined him for the second half of the 2017 season. His lowest ranking during that period was World No. 22.
More recently, Djokovic’s 10th stint at No. 1 lasted a total of 39 weeks, ending when Jannik Sinner made his No. 1 debut on 10 June, 2024. Djokovic’s 428 weeks atop the tennis rankings are the most across men’s and women’s professional tennis, ahead of Stefanie Graf’s WTA-leading 377 weeks.
