Prizmic impressed in his only previous meeting with Djokovic, aged 18 at the Australian Open in 2024, when he won a set against the Serbian. Two years and four months on from that clash, the Croatian qualifier started impressively against the 38-year-old in Rome, saving a break point early in the first set to raise the roof.

However, Djokovic, who had never previously lost in his opening match in Rome in 18 appearances, soon took an early lead. The No. 4 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, competing for the first time since his fourth-round defeat to Jack Draper in Indian Wells in March, was sharp around the net to break the Croatian's serve.

After winning the first set, Djokovic struggled physically throughout the second set, with Prizmic levelling at 2-6, 6-2. The World No. 79 then carried that momentum into the start of the decider and won the first point of the set on Djokovic's serve with a deft forehand touch that left the 38-year-old smiling.

With confidence high and just a second Top-10 win in sight (Ben Shelton, Madrid 2026), Prizmic continued to put his foot on the gas. At 2-2, 0/15, Prizmic found a moment of magic on the Djokovic serve, firing a backhand winner down the line. The 20-year-old would go on to break Djokovic's serve in that fifth game.

The Croatian qualifier then held his nerve to serve out and triumph 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 after two hours and 17 minutes. Watch back the highlights below after Prizmic reached the third round at an ATP Masters 1000 event for the second time. The 20-year-old, who competed at the Next Gen ATP Finals last December, will next play Ugo Humbert.
