Arthur Fils has qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time.
The Frenchman will become the first player from his country to compete in the season finale since Gael Monfils in 2016.
Fils did not begin his season until February, when he was the No. 42 player in the PIF ATP Rankings. But the 22-year-old has stormed towards the top of the sport since and now will make his debut on the season-finale stage.
The 22-year-old won an ATP Masters 1000 title for the first time in Cincinnati, where he defeated Turin hopeful Frances Tiafoe in the final. He also lifted the trophy in Barcelona, saving two match points in the first round against Terence Atmane before surging to the championship.
Fils advanced to at least the semi-finals at three Masters 1000 events — in Miami, Madrid and Cincinnati — becoming the second Frenchman to make three Masters 1000 semi-finals in a season. The last Frenchman to do it was Guy Forget in 1991, 35 years ago.
This year’s Doha titlist reached his career-high PIF ATP Ranking, No. 7, on Monday. Fils cracked the Top 10 for the first time in September.
Only two places remain at Inalpi Arena in Turin. Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton, Daniil Medvedev and Flavio Cobolli have also qualified.
