Joao Fonseca announced Monday that he has withdrawn from the US Open.
The No. 26 player in the PIF ATP Rankings cited an injury to his abdomen. The Brazilian beat Botic van de Zandschulp in his opening match in Cincinnati, but withdrew before the third round.
“Hi everyone. I wanted to give you all an update,” Fonseca wrote on Instagram. “After undergoing tests and starting treatment for my abdomen, it became clear to me and my team that I need more time to fully recover so I can compete at a high level. Unfortunately, this means I won't be able to play in the US Open. It was not an easy decision to make, as it is a very special tournament for me. We'll keep working hard so I can come back as soon as possible.
“I’m super grateful for all the messages of support and for the birthday wishes, thank you! 🙏🏻”
Fonseca made his main-draw debut at the US Open last year, when he defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round and then fell to Tomas Machac in the second round.
The two-time ATP Tour titlist made his first major quarter-final earlier this year at Roland Garros. Fonseca owns a 19-13 record this season according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
