Fritz eases past Majchrzak to reach third consecutive Washington quarter-final

Taylor Fritz advanced to the quarter-finals of the Mubadala DC Open for the third consecutive time on Wednesday, cruising past Kamil Majchrzak 6-3, 6-4 in a match defined by the American’s dominance on serve.

The World No. 10 in the PIF ATP Rankings dropped just seven points on his own serve according to Infosys ATP Stats, stifling all hopes of a second consecutive upset for Majchrzak, who knocked out Tommy Paul a day earlier in Washington. Majchrzak had already recorded three Top 10 wins this season, but Fritz relied on his big serve, hitting 14 aces and winning 90 per cent of his first serve points to move to a 2-0 Lexus ATP Head2Head record against the Pole.

While Fritz is into his third quarter-final in Washington in his past three appearances, the American will have eyes on a deeper run this time around after falling short in his two most recent trips to the tournament in 2025 (quarter-finals) and 2023 (semi-finals).

Fritz has now reached at least the quarter-finals in the past four events he has played and is set to move past Ben Shelton into the No. 1 American spot with a 370 point lead in the live PIF ATP Rankings. Fritz is also still searching for his first title in 2026 after runner-up finishes at the ATP 500 events in Dallas and Halle.

“I’ve been playing here a long time and the year I made the semi-finals I was feeling pretty good,” Fritz said after the match. “So yeah, I would like to get [this title].”

Next up for Fritz will be a clash against the winner of Wednesday evening’s match between Alex Michelsen and Adrian Mannarino. While the third seed Fritz will be the favourite against either winner, he has a losing Lexus ATP Head2Head record against both potential opponents.
