Lorenzo Musetti ended his long wait for ATP Tour glory on Sunday, when he overcame Taylor Fritz to capture his first tour-level title since 2022 at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes in Lyon.
The Italian earned an impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory against the second-seeded American Fritz in the title match, snapping his seven-match losing streak in tour-level finals. Following his win at the ATP 250 event, Musetti dropped to the floor in celebration before he embraced Fritz at the net.
“It is totally unexpected for the history of this tournament for me this week. It is such a rollercoaster,” said Musetti, who saved four match points against Flavio Cobolli in the semi-finals. “I saved four match points and then played a fantastic final. Before I stepped on court I was feeling pain everywhere. But when I stepped on court I started to focus on the match and the tennis I think was my best. I am really proud and happy of this.”
In a flawless first-set display, Musetti struck a number of stunning winners off both wings to gain early control. The sixth seed then maintained his energy and focus in the second set, holding his nerve to serve out and capture his third ATP Tour trophy after 80 minutes.
Musetti battled past Luca Van Assche in three sets in the quarter-finals in Lyon and then saved four match points in his hard-fought semi-final victory against countryman Cobolli. By defeating Fritz in the final, Mustetti became the ninth player this year to save match points en route to a tour-level crown, with Ben Shelton achieving the feat at two different events (Dallas and Stuttgart).
"The spirit of fight was the key for this tournament," Musetti added. "I had an incredible attitude. I have to say thanks to my team. The medical staff and physio to get me back in shape. Today I felt more relaxed inside my head and my tennis was more fluid and it was a great performance... It is such a dream I don't want to wake up."
Musetti was playing in his second tour-level final of the season, having struggled with injuries during 2026. The Italian, who did reach the quarter-finals at the Australian Open in January and the last eight at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati in August, is up two spots to No. 24 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings following his Lyon run. The 24-year-old has also improved to 5-3 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Fritz, who committed 28 unforced errors in the final.
Washington champion Fritz was chasing his second trophy of the year and had not dropped a set en route to the Lyon title match, defeating Tommy Paul in the semi-finals.
The American leaves the ATP 250 event up one spot at 12th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, 464 points behind ninth-placed Rafael Jodar, who is in the final qualification spot for the Nitto ATP Finals. Fritz will look to continue his late push for Turin next week when he competes at the ATP 500 event in Basel.
